My name is Melissa Miller. I started taking belly dance classes a little over three years ago. I had no idea when I walked into that first class what I was getting into. I just knew that I needed a creative outlet, a way to become more physically active, and a place to meet new people. I was intrigued at the idea of a belly dance class so I decided to give it a try. Little did I know when I signed up, that I would soon find a real sense of community, yielding meaningful friendships, a bold, new, sense of self-confidence, and a very real passion for dance. Prior to taking belly dance classes, I had no dance experience, so it was very exciting, and sometimes frustrating, to challenge myself to make my body move in ways it never had before. I completely fell in love with the art of belly dance. Today, I am a member of the Advanced class at Desert Sky Dance Company. I feel so honored to have the opportunity to dance with some very talented women, who are a big inspiration and encouragement to me. One of the things I love most about our group of ladies is that we lift each other up. If one of us struggles, the others are there to offer help and support. I get a lot of joy and fulfillment in dance, but the people I am surrounded by are what help me thrive. During our winter session, I will be assisting the instructor in the Level 2 class. I have been given the opportunity to learn how to teach, and in the future I hope to give back to our studio in whatever ways I can be most useful. Desert Sky Dance Company has become a valuable part of my life and it is my goal to share with other women the encouragement and empowerment that I have found through belly dance and the amazing group of women I have come to know as my tribe. Just a few short years ago, I never would have dreamed I'd become a belly dancer! But, here I am, a 40 year old wife and mom of two, living it up and loving every minute of it! As we begin a new year, let me encourage you to live your best life, take chances, love yourself, and step out of your comfort zone. In the past three years, my life has changed so much for the better all because I took that first step into the unknown. If you're looking at a new venture in the coming year, go for it!
